6/07 Spring Sports Success
Over the course of the spring 2007 sports season, five Friends teams were ranked among the state’s best. By the end of the season, the boys’ lacrosse team and three boys’ singles tennis players had played their way to the state finals; a track athlete had hurdled her way to the prestigious Meet of Champions; the girls’ soccer team and a girls’ tennis player had made it to the state semi-finals; and there was plenty to cheer about.

In track, three Friends relay teams and five individual athletes qualified to compete in the state meet. Sophomore Christina Chapman, in her first season of track, placed second in the 300m hurdles and fourth in the 100m high hurdles. The second place finish qualified Christina for the Meet of Champions. In boys’ tennis, all five Friends players/teams, both singles and doubles, qualified for and won state tournament matches for key team points, and in a remarkable sweep, all three singles players made it to the final round. The team finished second. At third singles, Travis Peck earned his second individual state championship. In girls’ tennis, junior Allie Hammons entered the tournament as the sixth seed at first singles, but won her way to the semi-finals, upsetting the number three seed before losing to the eventual state champion.

The girls’ lacrosse team was ranked in the top-10 for most of the season, and just missed making the small eight-team state tournament field. Senior Emily McMillan was named first-team All State, and junior Carrie Hopkins was chosen second-team All State. On the boys’ lacrosse field, the post-season action continued all the way to the state finals, led by a strong senior class—including All-Staters and Senior All-Star Game players Doug Adams, Clay Cowperthwait, and Deane Mellor (junior Bobby DeWees also earned All-State honors). The girls’ soccer team qualified for the state tournament as the fifth seed, and advanced to the semi-finals losing to nationally ranked and undefeated state champion Padua, playing the Pandas tough, 0-0 until the game’s 64th minute. Brooke Sheppard was named first-team All State in soccer; Kristi Kerrigan and senior Lauren Schmittle were chosen second-team All State.

5/07 Friends Joins School Year Abroad
This year, Wilmington Friends became the first school in Delaware accepted into School Year Abroad (SYA), a consortium of top independent schools across the country with a commitment to international education. The program was founded by Phillips Academy in 1964; other SYA charter schools are Phillips Exeter Academy and St. Paul’s School in New Hampshire. SYA allows students to live in Europe or China for an academic year while earning credits toward graduation from their U.S. high schools. Member schools have additional opportunities for students to participate in summer programs and for faculty to teach and study abroad. The emphasis of SYA is on cultural understanding, language fluency, and consistent high-level preparation for university study. Students live with families, and study at SYA schools both in English and in the language of the host country.

Longtime New Orleans resident Christina Papastavros Fay is a graduate of Wilmington Friends, and her daughters Hannah and Kelly attended Friends in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina while their schools were closed. The spring break group gutted two homes, did outreach work in the lower Ninth Ward, and heard from everyone they met, “Please come. Come to visit. Come to work.” Marybeth Cashman remarked, “No doubt, Friends will be back.”

10/06 MS Students Present Research at National Conference
Four eighth grade students at Wilmington Friends-Alexa Pierce-Matlack, Caroline Face, Mara Freilich, and Cindy Tanzer-presented research at the Annual Meeting of the Geological Society of America (GSA), which was October 22-25 in Philadelphia. The Friends students were the only middle school students in the country to have their proposal accepted for presentation at the Meeting; they had a booth alongside students from Brown University, Rice University, Carleton College, the University of California, and others.

The presentation grew out of a project on hurricane Katrina in seventh grade earth science at Friends, taught by Mike Smith. Using a controlled experiment they designed in their classroom lab, Alexa, Caroline, Mara, and Cindy investigated the influence of levee base width on how long each levee would last during a flood before it eroded and collapsed. Alexa transformed her paper into a poster for the annual Science Expo at Friends. "She did such a good job," Mike Smith said, "when I heard that the GSA was going to have its Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, and that they wanted to encourage younger students' involvement in geological research, I thought it would be a great opportunity to submit an abstract."

The research group of four students worked together on the final poster and presentation, "Hurricane Katrina: Using a Stream Table to Investigate the Role of Levee Base Width on Failure Time During Floods." The poster, with the students presenting and responding to questions, was on display from 8:00 a.m. to noon on Sunday, October 22, at the Philadelphia Convention Center. "University students, geology professors, and professional geoscientists talked with our students about their research," Mike Smith said.

The GSA Annual Meeting is, Smith added, "the premier meeting of geologists in the United States," with 10,000 to 15,000 geologists typically attending. Remembering the GSA Annual Meeting where he presented his own master's research in 1985, Smith said, "I never thought then that I'd see middle school students at such a prestigious event. In fact, neither did GSA. They had to convene a special staff meeting this summer just to decide on how to register our students, because they only had options for college students and professors."
