'04 - Fifth Grade Sells "Fair Trade" Chocolate
In the late spring, fifth graders organized a sale of "Free
Trade Chocolate" at school events, to call attention to areas
in the world where the use of slave labor persists and to support
anti-slavery efforts. The students petitioned Head of Lower School
to support the project, writing, "Our class would like to see
if we could organize a sale of fair trade chocolate to raise money
for an organization called Free the Slaves. The Free the Slaves
organization helps free slaves all around the world. The slaves
we are especially worried about are the child slaves that harvest
cocoa in Ivory Coast in Africa. The children are kidnapped and sold
to cocoa plantation owners, which is illegal. Some of these slaves
are whipped every day, and sometimes even killed." The chocolate
sales were very successful, and the class plans to continue the
service project in sixth grade.

'04 - Seventh Graders on YPT Soccer Team
Bryce Sheppard and Austin Holbrook, both seventh graders new to
Friends, played on a Youth Professional Training soccer team that
traveled to Europe this summer. The trip began with training in
Holland, then continued in Germany and Belgium. In addition to playing
against some of the top youth teams in Europe--including a win described
by the coach as "unexpected" against a German club considered
a training ground for top professional players--the team had a chance
to watch a professional match and do some sight-seeing.
