General Employment Opportunities

Preschool Teaching Opportunity for 2008-2009

Wilmington Friends School a coeducational Quaker day school enrolling 850 students in preschool through grade twelve, seeks a lead preschool teacher for its new half-day three-year old program, Alapocas Threes, for the 2008-2009 school year.

At Friends, a child’s intellectual, emotional, physical, social, and spiritual development are important in all aspects of the program, with the development of the child’s self-confidence as the central theme. In nurturing children’s diverse talents and strengths, we strive to help children to feel secure and confident in their work and play, as well as in peer and adult relationships, and to develop respect for themselves and members of the community. We strive to provide a program of sufficient scope, encouragement, and flexibility to meet the individual needs and talents of all our students while encouraging academic excellence.

The lead teacher in this preschool program will work with a group of fourteen children, supported by an associate teacher. The lead teacher will have the opportunity, working with the staff of the school, and in particular the staff from our preschool facility downtown, to develop a program of activities for the children that is informed by Quaker philosophy, developmentally appropriate, and consistent with current best practices. Through their experiences in the preschool program, children will be well prepared for success in our kindergarten program.

Candidates who value working in an environment of inclusive diversity are particularly encouraged to apply. Interested candidates should send a resume to Julie Gill, Head of Lower School, Wilmington Friends School, 101 School Road, Wilmington, DE 19803. We will invite for interviews and demonstration teaching on campus, those candidates whose interests and experiences best fit our needs.

Associate Teacher Program

Wilmington Friends School, a preschool through 12th grade Quaker independent school enrolling approximately 850 students, has a lower school associate teacher program. Due to its internship format, the associate teacher program has approximately 8-10 openings each year for new associate teachers. The mission of the associate teacher program is to give lead lower school homebase teachers excellent classroom support in their work with students while providing hands-on experience and mentoring to teachers relatively new to the field of education. Specifically, our associate program allows for the following:

  • teachers are better able to individualize instruction as we seek to meet each student's needs;
  • having two teachers in each classroom allows for continuity when one teacher needs to be out of the room or out of school;
  • students interact with two teachers who bring varied backgrounds, experiences, characteristics, and personal qualities to their work;
  • because of the need to discuss what they are doing in the classroom and why they are doing it, both teachers reflect more on their practice;
  • in the Quaker tradition, and consistent with the school's own history and mission, WFS serves the field of education and the broader community by mentoring new teachers;
  • we have a pool of strong staff for our preschool/lower school/middle school after-school program and our middle/upper school athletic program;
  • we have a pool of candidates with experience at our school when the need arises to search for long-term substitutes and lead teachers.

With two teachers in every classroom from pre-kindergarten through grade five, the associate teacher supports the work of the lead teacher in a multitude of ways. Associate teachers are involved in virtually every aspect of classroom teaching. They have a range of responsibilities depending on their interests and level of experience and on the particular lead teacher with whom each is working. Over the course of the year, an associate typically is involved in most of the following duties: working with individual students or small groups in all subject areas, leading the full class while the lead teacher is in a meeting or off-campus, covering recess and lunch, putting up bulletin boards, preparing materials for lessons, reading aloud to the class, planning and implementing lessons in collaboration with the lead, attending team meetings, attending parent conferences, and assessing student work. In addition to classroom duties, associates are involved in a professional development program, including regular meetings with all associates, bi-weekly supervisory meetings with the assistant head of lower school, professional development retreats, and at least one off-campus conference during the year.

Strong candidates typically have significant prior experience working with children, as well as coursework in elementary education. Most important is an ability to work closely with another teacher in supporting children's growth. A candidate must be a flexible person willing to take on various challenges to succeed in this job. Because we are looking to train future lead teachers through their work in the program, we are most interested in candidates who hope to gain teaching experience that will one day lead to their appointment as a lead teacher. These positions, therefore, are structured as one- to three-year experiences. Candidates with diverse backgrounds – and candidates committed to working on diversity issues – and members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) are particularly encouraged to apply.

Interested candidates should send a resume and cover letter to Barbara Tarr, Assistant Head of Lower School (btarr@wilmingtonfriends.org; 302.576.2963 phone; 302.576.2967 fax).
