Bringing Homeostasis to Life in Upper School Biology

Upper school biology students brought the concept of homeostasis to life through a lab that demonstrated how the human body maintains balance.
In the “Homer-o-stasis” activity, students worked in teams to keep “Homer” alive for five minutes by carefully regulating his temperature, fluid levels, and electrolyte concentration. As conditions constantly changed, students had to think critically and collaborate to make real-time adjustments—adding hot or cold water and concentrated solution to restore balance.

The experiment gave students a visual and interactive way to understand one of the most important characteristics of living things: the body’s ability to maintain stable internal conditions. Through teamwork, problem-solving, and observation, students experienced firsthand how complex and essential homeostasis really is.
