First Grade Opinion Writing

First graders are engaged in their new writing unit about opinion writing. Teacher Patrick began the unit by sharing a collection of small erasers and picking the one that he thought was the best. He then gave three reasons why that one eraser, the dog, was the greatest. Once he had a turn, the kids had a turn picking one of the erasers and explaining why that was the best.

He then gave three reasons why that one eraser, the dog, was the greatest. Once he had a turn, the kids had a turn picking one of the erasers and explaining why that was the best. The students then found a collection at home to bring in and share with the class, such as rocks, little toys, lego people, etc. After displaying their collections, they went around the room and looked at everyone else's collections and wrote opinion pieces on which item was best and three reasons why. They were very convincing!
