Spotlight on Clubs and Committees: Black Student Union

Led by faculty advisor and upper school math teacher Erica Childs, the WFS Black Student Union meets every “Day 2” and provides a welcoming space for over 50 WFS students.
This space, and the various discussions that they have about topics concerning and affecting the Black community, has been instrumental for Aniyah Barnett ’22. Aniyah states, “Belonging to the Black Student Union and Women of Color Clubs has empowered me, inspiring me to do more for my community. Leading a club full of teenagers can be difficult, but I would regret not leading my peers. These clubs continue to show me how to be a strong, young, Black woman in our society and in our school environment.”

This leadership was on display last week when, to celebrate the beginning of Black History Month, the clerks of the WFS Black Student Union organized a Jeopardy game for the WFS upper school students. Led by Aniyah, Hannah Carter ’22, Ameer Bashir ’22, Kenny Norwood ’22, and Laila Broussard ’23, the Jeopardy game was an informative and interactive way to honor Black culture and learn about historical Black figures.
