A Visit with Delaware's Poets Laureate

As part of Black History Month celebrations, middle school students met with Delaware’s Twin Poets Laureate, Representative Nnamdi O. Chukwuocha (also a WFS parent) and City Councilman Albert Mills.
Students had previously engaged in an advisory-based introduction to spoken-word poetry about Black history and oral tradition to prepare for the Twin Poets visit. Nnamdi and Al, who have been Delaware's Poets Laureate since 2015, provided examples of how their words and their voices speak to modern day conditions. Their goal is to give purpose, to lift others up, and to inspire change and positive action in their communities and the people they interact with. They did just that and spoke with our students about how to use their voices, to be unafraid of being their own unique individual self, to love themselves and their purpose, and recognize themselves as strong and powerful, even when they might be feeling small and powerless.
