Celebrities Who are Vegan and Why They Eat Plant-Based

Grace Morrison ’22
I have been vegan for over a year now, and love it! Through being vegan, I have taught myself how to cook, I feel better, and I have more energy. As an athletic person, I am less sluggish during workouts, and am able to perform to the best of my ability.
Other benefits of a vegan lifestyle include slimming down, lowers blood sugar levels, improved kidney function, lower risk of heart disease and cancer, and reduced pain from arthritis. With all these benefits, it is no wonder why celebrities adopt a vegan lifestyle to look and feel their best. Here are what some celebrities say about being vegan:

Venus Williams went vegan after being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. A vegan, plant-based diet is proven to lessen inflammation caused by autoimmune disease. After being vegan, she found that her performance on the court improved. She said, “I fell in love with the concept of fueling your body in the best way possible.”

High School Musical’s heartthrob, Zac Efron, credits veganism for his toned body. He also claims that having a vegan diet helps him sleep and exercise. In an interview with Teen Vogue, Efron stated, “That’s completely changed the way that my body works, and the way that I metabolize food, the way it turns into energy, the way that I sleep. It’s been brilliant. It’s been great for my exercise, and great for my routine.”

Since 2013 Ariana Grande has been vegan. She announced her lifestyle change on Twitter claiming she made the change for love for animals. Grande attributes her diet with being a happier person. After a year of being vegan she stated in an interview, “I love animals more than I love most people, not kidding. But I am a firm believer in eating a full plant-based, whole food diet that can expand your life length and make you an all-around happier person. It is tricky dining out, but I just stick to what I know — veggies, fruit and salad — then when I get home I'll have something else.”

Academy Award winner, Joaquin Phoenix, has been vegan since a child back in 1977 after having a violent experience with how fishers treat their catch. He recalls the story of him and his siblings bawling to his mother saying, “How come you didn’t tell us that’s what fish was? I remember tears streaming down her face... She didn’t know what to say.” After that moment, his whole family has been vegan.

Going vegan may seem hard to accomplish, but let me and these celebrities prove it is not. Along with health benefits, there are also eco benefits. If you would like to go vegan, but don't know where to start here are some tips. Start off easy! Dedicate 1 day out of every week to be vegan, then slowly add a day until you were fully vegan. Also, your meals do not have to be complex. My staple meals are smoothies, oatmeal, pasta, salads, and peanut butter jelly sandwiches. My biggest tip is to keep it simple and do not put too much pressure on yourself, because you are trying your best and that is all that matters!
