Hands-On Magnetism Launches Ninth Graders into Physics Exploration

Ninth-grade Physics students are exploring the fundamentals of magnetism through hands-on investigation.
After rubbing iron nails with magnets to induce magnetization, they observed how their newly magnetized nails behaved like tiny compasses—floating on pieces of styrofoam and aligning with Earth’s magnetic north and south. This simple yet powerful activity helps students see magnetic forces in action and sparks deeper questions about how and why these interactions occur.

Physics 1 builds on this kind of inquiry-driven learning throughout the year. Each unit begins with an anchoring phenomenon that invites students to share initial ideas before experimenting, collecting data, and developing explanations together. Through labs, simulations, and class discussions, students move from observation to evidence-based conclusions, ending each unit with mathematical models that solidify their understanding.
