WFS Student-Athletes Shine in State Tournaments

Wilmington Friends School student-athletes delivered an outstanding week of postseason performances, representing the Blue with pride across the DIAA State Championships. From record-breaking swims and podium finishes to historic wrestling milestones, standout track performances, and a hard-fought basketball season, the Quakers once again showcased the talent, resilience, and leadership that define WFS athletics.
 
 
Swimming: The WFS girls’ swimming team capped off an outstanding 2025–26 season on Saturday evening at the DIAA State Championships, placing fourth overall!

Aubrey Ashman ’26 concluded her five-year varsity career with two strong individual performances, placing sixth in the 200 IM and ninth in the 100 fly. Kylie Poole ’28 led the Quakers in scoring, finishing second overall in both the 200 IM and the 100 back. Ellie Romano ’28 continued her excellent sophomore campaign, placing fourth in the 100 back and seventh in the 100 fly. Evelyn Bilek ’26 improved upon her third-place finish in 2025 in the girls’ one-meter diving event, earning silver this year. In relay action, Ashman, Pamela Moore ’27, Poole, and Romano earned bronze in the 400 free relay. They also finished fifth in the 200 free relay. 

The WFS boys’ swim team continued its excellent season on Saturday afternoon at the DIAA State Championship Finals. Cael McDonnell ’28 capped off an outstanding sophomore campaign with a 7th-place finish in the 500 freestyle and an 11th-place finish in the 200 freestyle. In relay action, Gavin Jefferson ’26, Theo Lawrence ’26, Jackson Burns ’28, and McDonnell combined for a 14th-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay. Jefferson, Lawrence, Matthew McKenzie ’27, and McDonnell also teamed up to place 15th in the 200 freestyle relay.

Wrestling: Sloan Makoujy ’26 capped off an incredible high school wrestling career on Saturday evening, finishing as State Runner-Up after a hard-fought 1–0 decision against an undefeated opponent in the State Championship Finals. After competing at 157 pounds for most of the season, Makoujy made the move up two weight classes to 175 pounds for the State Tournament, demonstrating both his versatility and competitive grit. He closed the year with an outstanding 47–3 record.

Sloan finishes his career as a five-time State Qualifier, four-time State Placer, and two-time State Finalist. His resume includes a championship at the Milford Invitational, three titles at the Canal Classic, and four DISC championships. Makoujy also ranks as the fourth-winningest wrestler in Delaware state history with 189 career victories and earned First Team All-State Academic honors five times.

Pierce Burns ’26, Kyler Fleming ’27, Brayden McLaughlin ’28, and Cooper Miller ’28 represented WFS with determination and pride on the first day of the DIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament on Friday evening. By qualifying for States, each earned their place among Delaware’s top 16 wrestlers in their respective weight classes—an accomplishment that reflects the hard work, perseverance, and commitment they showed all season long. Battling against elite competition, they left everything on the mat and competed with resilience from start to finish.

​​​​​​​Track & Field: Chuma Chukwuocha ’27 and Zoë Mooney-Doyle ’27 turned in outstanding performances while representing Wilmington Friends School at the 2026 DIAA State Indoor Track & Field Championship! 

Chukwuocha delivered a career-best showing in the triple jump, earning a second-place finish with a personal record leap of 47-5.75. Scoring PRs in his last three triple jumps, he is now ranked #39 in the country for high school track & field athletes. He also scored for the Quakers in the high jump, placing sixth overall. Mooney-Doyle continued her record-breaking season, lowering her own school mark in the 1600 with a time of 5:24.72 to place tenth, and she added a 12th-place finish in the 800.

Girls’ Basketball: The WFS girls’ basketball team fell to Ursuline Academy in the first round of the DIAA State Tournament on Monday evening. The Quakers finished the year with an overall record of 13–8, including 11 contests against tournament teams, competing against one of the most challenging schedules in the state.

The Class of 2026 caps an impressive four-year run that saw the program win 48 games while advancing to three DIAA State Tournaments. Ryan Weigand ’26 and Gianna Cottone ’26—who began their varsity careers as 8th graders—were part of 59 wins over five seasons and advanced to four DIAA State Tournaments.

Throughout their time in the program, the Class of 2026 worked tirelessly, set the tone with their commitment and competitiveness, and led by example. Their leadership and dedication strengthened the culture of WFS girls’ basketball and left the program well-positioned for continued success.
