Second Graders Bake and Learn with Teacher Alex Mellow ’01

Second Grade Teacher Alex Mellow ’01 is one of 25 teachers selected as a Pilot Light Food Education Fellow, a program that helps students learn more about food and nutrition in their everyday classroom learning.
As the calendar (and weather) turned to fall, Alex's students began studying a seasonal favorite: the pumpkin. They learned about the pumpkin’s external and internal parts and discovered that many parts are edible, including the leaves, seeds, core, and flowers!

The class then tried their hand at making pumpkin bread pudding! From cracking eggs to whisking the ingredients together, each student participated in the pumpkin bread-making process. When they weren’t helping teacher Alex, students were writing down their observations: What did the pumpkin puree taste like? What did it look like? What surprised them most?

Once the pumpkin bread pudding was ready, students enjoyed tasting their treat!
