Building Skills Through Outdoor Play: Inside the Early Years Fall Festival

Active, experiential learning starts with our youngest students at Wilmington Friends!
Our Early Years program engaged in the annual Fall Festival on the Natural Playground—a teacher-designed experience that combines outdoor exploration, cognitive skill building, and cross-classroom community.

This year, Early Years students rotated through a variety of interactive learning stations:
  • Artistic Expression: Students decorated their own pumpkins, fostering fine motor control and personal creativity.
  • Interactive Storytelling: Children gathered outdoors for seasonal story time that builds early literacy and active listening skills.
  • Cognitive Play: Fall-themed puzzles encouraged spatial reasoning, patience, and cooperative problem-solving.
  • Gross Motor Games: Mini-pumpkin cornhole provided a festive twist on hand-eye coordination and active turn-taking.
  • Community Connection: Students enjoyed festive fall treats while bonding with classmates and teachers across the Early Years division.
By integrating campus nature spaces into the daily curriculum, Wilmington Friends School delivers early childhood education rooted in curiosity, Quaker values, and joy. Our Early Years program lays the groundwork for lifelong learning, demonstrating how hands-on, outdoor experiences shape confident, collaborative learners from their very first steps on campus.
