From Liquid to Thread: Upper School Chemists Bring the “Nylon Rope Trick” to Life

Upper school chemistry students recently brought science to life through the “nylon rope trick,” exploring how one of the world’s first fully synthetic fibers is made.
By carefully combining two solutions, students watched as nylon formed instantly at the interface—then pulled it into a continuous thread right before their eyes. This hands-on experiment highlighted the chemistry behind polymerization while showcasing the strength, flexibility, and real-world applications of materials we use every day. It was an engaging and memorable way to connect classroom learning with innovation and industry.
