Advanced Chemists Make Mirrored Ornaments

Advanced chemistry students explored science and creativity by making mirrored ornaments and testing ways to preserve silvered surfaces.
To slow oxidation, they coated the inside with melted wax—and went further by making it pine-scented.

To add the pine scent, students distilled their own pinene—the aromatic terpene that gives Christmas trees their characteristic smell—using clippings brought from home. This allowed them to connect organic chemistry principles, lab techniques, and seasonal tradition, turning a decorative project into a hands-on scientific investigation.
