From Ions to Ornaments: 10th Graders Bring Electrochemistry to Life

10th-grade chemistry students tackled electrochemistry with a hands-on copper-plating ornament project, discovering how chemical reactions deposit metal onto objects.
Students readied their ornaments, mixed the plating solution, and watched as copper ions traveled and bonded throughout the process.

As an optional extension, students produced their own how-to videos, documenting each experimental step—unpacking the chemistry behind the reactions and sharpening their scientific communication skills. By making, observing, and teaching, students cemented core chemistry concepts in creative and engaging ways.
