Quakerism Students Explore Prison Reform Through the Legacy of Elizabeth Fry

10th grade Quakerism students explored the role Quakers played in the early prison reform movement in England, focusing on the work of Elizabeth Fry.
As part of their study, students welcomed Lt. Wells from the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution, who spoke about his role supporting individuals during some of the most difficult moments of their lives and the importance of recognizing each person’s humanity—seeking “that of God” in everyone.

Students also met with Tim Terranova (parent of a Friends alumni) and Tom Martin, both facilitators with the Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP), to continue the conversation around dignity, conflict resolution, and restorative approaches to justice.
