Uncovering the Science of Autumn: 8th Graders Explore Why Leaves Change Color

In 8th-grade Life Science, students explored the guiding question: Why do leaves change color in the fall?
Throughout this unit, they investigated photosynthesis, leaf pigments, visible light, microscopy, leaf anatomy, mixtures, and even chemical formulas to understand the science behind seasonal color changes.

For their chromatography lab, students collected leaves, created pigment solutions, and used chromatography strips to separate and observe the individual pigments. Their chromatograms revealed the variety of pigments hidden in each leaf, and demonstrated how differences in solubility allow those pigments to travel at different rates.

A vibrant, hands-on way to see the science of autumn in action!
