Middle School Students Travel to Puerto

In June, 37 WFS middle school students embarked on an unforgettable journey to Puerto Rico for a week of cultural exploration, environmental learning, and community connection.

During their time on the island, students toured the Finca Don Manuel Tropical Fruit Farm. They later participated in a hands-on cooking class where they learned to make mofongo, a traditional Puerto Rican dish. They took a salsa dance class, and explored the streets and historic landmarks of Old San Juan and Ponce.
Students also hiked and swam through caves at Charco Azul in Vega Baja, part of the Karst Forest, and took a nighttime boat ride to experience the bioluminescent bay. One of the most meaningful parts of the trip was participating in a People-to-People service exchange with a summer camp in the city of Yauco and visiting the colorful, mural-covered streets of the nearby “¡Yaucromatic!” neighborhood.

This trip offered a meaningful and immersive experience in the language and culture of Puerto Rico!
