Middle School Students Participate in Junior Youth in Government Model Legislature

Ten representatives from the Wilmington Friends School Middle School Youth in Government Club traveled to Dover, Delaware to participate in the State Junior Youth in Government Model Legislature.
Throughout the fall, students met weekly to research issues affecting Delaware and draft mock bills designed to create positive change. At the State Capitol, they presented their bills in the General Assembly Chambers, debating with peers from across the state as part of this hands-on simulation of the legislative process.

All WFS student-authored bills passed the legislature and were signed by the Youth Governor — an impressive accomplishment! Their proposals addressed topics including equal pay for workers, protection against gang recruitment, the addition of English and writing teachers in schools, fairer college admissions, and enhanced training to prevent physical and emotional abuse in schools.

Participants included: Raina Anderson ’30, Liam Emery-Wu ’30, Samara Elam ’30, Nadir Fareed ’30, Theo Gallagher ’30, Drew Harris ’30, Zoe Hutchful ’30, Alana Mand ’30, Maddie Wilson ’30, and Merrymay Wu ’30.
