Building Peaceful Problem-Solvers: Middle School Students Learn to Navigate Conflict with Confidence

Middle school students participated in the Workable Peace curriculum from the Consensus Building Institute, where they built skills to navigate conflict with empathy, respect, and confidence.
Through interactive scenarios, students worked to resolve both one-on-one and multi-party conflicts using the PEACE framework:

• Prepare to seek peace – Am I ready to work toward resolution?
• Explore needs and concerns – Listening to and understanding each perspective
• Acknowledge needs and rights – Ensuring all voices are heard and respected
• Control violence and build trust – Committing to respectful communication and positive action
• Engage in negotiations – Generating mutually agreeable solutions that meet both parties’ bottom-line needs

Once students have effectively demonstrated these skills, they can serve as a "coach" and help their classmates navigate these issues. By practicing these strategies, students learn to approach challenges thoughtfully, strengthen relationships, and contribute to a more supportive community.
