HL IB Biology Use CRISPR/Cas9 Technology in Lab

HL IB Biology year two students used CRISPR/Cas9 technology in their latest gene knockout lab to disrupt a gene in bacteria and observe a phenotypic change as a result.

 
Bacteria with the disabled gene grow in white colonies, and the control plates of bacteria grow as bright blue colonies.

CRISPR/Cas9 is a gene-editing technology which involves two essential components: a guide RNA to match a desired target gene, and Cas9 (CRISPR-associated protein 9)—an endonuclease which causes a double-stranded DNA break, allowing modifications to the genome.
